abstract

inorganic lead compounds are used most widely in paint and pigment industries. because of exposure to lead dust in workers in a copying center, we compared blood lead levels in these workers to normal individuals and investigated the relationship between job tenures of the workers and their blood lead levels. this survey was performed on 20 simple workers in a copying center of tehran university. the ages of the workers were between 27 and 62 years, and job tenures of the workers were between i and 27 years. our results indicated that 94% of the workers had high blood lead concentrations (>49.9 µg/dl) and only 6% showed acceptable (30-49.9 µg/dl) blood lead levels. blood lead levels of these workers were significantly higher than that of controls (p<0.01). their blood lead levels and job tenures showed a direct but imperfect correlation [coefficient of correlation (r)=0.68] and the confidence interval was between 0.3-1.36 (95% confidence). clinical manifestations of intoxication in these workers included clumsiness, abdominal pain, lumbar pain and peripheral pain as main symptoms. the results of this study indicate that copying rooms are at high risk for lead poisoning.

Indirect Determination of Ascorbic Acid by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

A new and simple method followed by atomic absorption spectrometry has been developedfor indirect determination of ascorbic acid (AA). The proposed method was based on the oxidationof AA to dehydroascorbic acid with Cu2+cation(200mgL-1)in an ammonium thiocyanatesolution atpH2.4. AA reduces Cu2+to Cu+followed by the precipitation of Cu+ with SCN-. Then, the excess ofCu2+in the solution was measu...

Determination of lead and cadmium in water samples by cloud point extraction prior to flame atomic absorption spectrometry determination

Pb and Cd in water samples were determined by cloud point extraction (CPE) with sodiumdiethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) as the chelating agent and octylphenoxypolyethanl (Triton X-114) asthe surfactant prior to flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) determination. The main factorsof affecting the extraction and detection processes were optimized. The preconcentration of 10 mL ofstandard soluti...

Preconcentration of Cu(II)with magnetic nanocomposite sorbentsprior to determination by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer

A simple, highly sensitive, accurate and selective method for determination of trace amounts of Cu2+ in water samples .In this paper, Chitosan was used to encapsulate nano-Fe3O4 and produce a nano-Fe3O4-CHITOSAN sorbent based new sorbent was prepared. This was treated with ethylenediamine (ED) in another solvent-free procedure for the formation of a novel nano-Fe3O4-Chitosan-ED.Flame atomic abs...
